Guidelines for ADA-Compliant Bed and Mattress Design

To ensure accessibility and comfort for guests with mobility limitations, please adhere to the following guidelines for bed and mattress design:

  1. Bed Height:

    • The height from the floor to the crown of the mattress should be between 19 and 23 inches. This range accommodates ease of transfer for individuals using wheelchairs and other mobility aids.
  2. Bed Frame Design:

    • No Border Frames: Choose bed frames without border frames that could obstruct wheelchair access. The bed should allow the wheelchair to be positioned directly next to the mattress for easy transfer.
    • Open Space: Opt for bed frames with at least 7 inches of open space between the floor and the bottom of the mattress to facilitate the use of portable lifts and other assistive devices.
  3. Clearance and Accessibility:

    • Foundation or Platform Clearance: Ensure that there is a minimum distance of 4.5 inches from the outside of the foundation or platform to the base or panels of the bed. This clearance allows for ample toe and wheelchair maneuverability.
  4. Mattress Selection:

    • Avoid Memory Foam: Refrain from using memory foam or form-fitting mattresses, as they may inhibit easy movement and transfer for individuals with mobility issues. Opt for mattresses that provide firm, supportive surfaces without conforming to the body.
  5. Consistency Across Rooms:

    • Uniformity: Ensure that mattresses and bed heights in ADA-compliant rooms are consistent with those in other guest rooms. Variations in height or construction could be perceived as discriminatory and must be avoided to maintain fairness and accessibility for all guests.
